Piracy isn't always a bad thing.

For example, Adobe Photoshop is arguably the de facto standard in the design industry because it was so ubiquitously pirated.

    1. Kid download warez copy of Photoshop, becomes interested in graphics/multimedia design
    3. Learns photoshop specific techniques and becomes accustomed to the photoshop way of doing things
    4. Write photoshop tutorials, recommends software to others
    5. Goes to work for a design firm which will pay for a legit copy
... eventually Adobe establishes dominance and becomes the market leader
