For ALL Potential Driver Applicants: If you are interested in becoming a CONVENTIONAL TRANSIT OPERATOR (Full sized buses, full time hours) it used to be suggested that you go out and ride a city trolley route, such as a #3 MAIN, #8 FRASER or #20 VICTORIA, for a round trip, such as a Friday afternoon rush hour, on on into the evening... Observe how the driver interacts with traffic and the trolley overhead... Heavy loads, informing about the fares, maybe receiving text messages from T-Comm on the radio display...

    Conventional Operators all start out in the city... Which means driving routes such as #2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 22, 25, 32, 33, 41, weekend 49, 50, 84 & 100... Plus some of the Late Night routes, such as N6, N8, N15, N16, N20, N22...

As you seniority improves, you can then switch depots- if you so desire... Usually Burnaby & Richmond are the easiest to get out too... Surrey the hardest...
We have 4 sign ups a year, usually 3 of which are just local (within your depot), but the Summer one for September is almost always a system wide Consolidated sign up.... That's when you can move around the easiest... In between consolidated sign ups we have a "Holding list" of people who want to move around when the opportunity arises...

Over on the TransLink website, www.translink.ca there is a BUZZER BLOG. And this past week or so, the Buzzer Blog took questions from the public to ask current employees...
One of the employees is a 6 year veteran driver in Vancouver, and he answered quite a few questions... You might like to check out his responces and such!

    Hi super,

Nomarlly , just wondering , if they hire bus driver every year or not? thanks

Well... They hire new drivers when they need new drivers... Up until the hiring freeze/budget freeze of one year ago, they were aiming for 300 new drivers a year, spread over new Training classes every 2 weeks... Like 24 classes a year....
Budget now frozen at 2011 levels, plus some drivers don't retire at 65, now that they don't have to....

There are approx 3,000 Conventional (Full time) Drivers systemwide, and another 400 Shuttle drivers...

When we run short of drivers, than the uncovered work/shifts goes out as Overtime...

If we can't cover all the work, them there are occasional service cancellations...

Generally speaking, we often run short of equipment (buses) in the winter, and run short of drivers in the summer...

And, I'll point out once again, Driving is NOT the only opportunity at Transit.

If you go to the Careers page at www.translink.ca right now, you'll discover:
    -about 15 opportunities at Translink...
-Click onto Coast Mountain Bus and discover 8 MORE opportunities, including a decent paying CUSTOMER INFORMATION CLERK posting. $20.91 hr PLUS 22% in lieu of benefits- while "temporary" status... Great way to get your foot in the door and then have access to Internal Postings...
-Click onto BCRTC and discover about 5 or 6 MORE Opportunities...
-Transit Police is actively recruiting new officers...
    -AirCare has some new opportunities...
-HandyDart is hiring on the East coast....

    - www.protransbc.com has had about 6 different opportunities listed recently over at Canada Line...

    - www.westvancouver.ca was accepting applications for Summer Transit Operators for months...

-BC Transit-Victoria has been accepting applications for months as well...

Opportunities come and go almost daily! Many postings only stay up/open for 5 business days... Got to keep an eye on the various websites and be ready to pounce when the opportunities present themselves... Get your foot in the door... Move around... Do 2 or 3 different jobs here, and then find the one that's right for you!

BREAKING NEWS: Coast Mountain Bus Company has a new posting up for SERVICEPERSONS!
Servicepersons help sweep out buses (at night), refuel buses, check oil levels/coolant levels, drive buses thru the wash rack; assist mechanics as needed, drive empty buses out for road changes, and drive the other buses back to the yard for attention...
SHIFT WORK. Most start out on nights! Like 8pm til 5am, 4 nights a week... As your seniority improves, you can try for afternoons or day shifts... They pick their shifts once a year, and then also bid on vacancies between sign ups...
Must be able to obtain a Class #3 licence, with air brake endorsement, after training!
Approx $19.30 an hour to start with a top rate of around $27.57 an hour...

You have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting a call back from Human Resources.....been several weeks now, have left voicemail for two different women in charge of CMBC and not a word. They don't care- there are so many applicants.

    Patience my friend...

I've heard thru the grapevince that maybe the June training class will be being delayed/postponed...
There is also an INTERNAL job posting up now for a Chief Training Instructor....

Apparently the bus loop in Newton is being re-developed now to make room for the new B-Line bus route that will be starting later this year...

Hi all. I'm just wondering if there is anyone who has gone through the hiring process with CMBC recently. What I would like to know is what is the typical timeline between the interview and notification as to whether or not they are going to proceed with your application? I was interviewed just over a week ago and still haven't heard back from them. Thanks for your time!

Hello! Sometimes things at CMBC do progress painfully slow...

It used to take on average of about 6 months to go from first appling to a start date.... It's been a little weird since the hiring freeze of May 2012.... Some who started the process a year ago, are just now moving thru the process...

You might find some useful information over at http://memebee.com/vancouver/viewforum.php?f=46 and then click onto either the "Coast Mountain Bus accepting DRIVER Applications Now!" thread, or just the separate "coast mountain bus" thread....

Hi Superchecker. Thanks for your reply!

I just thought things moved quickly at CMBC because from the time I applied online to my testing and interview was only 8 days. It's for a maintenance position not a driver. I passed the test with over 90%. I'm just hoping that if I blew the interview, they would let me know right away so that I can move on. Maybe the fact that it's taking longer is a good sign. I'm not used to all this waiting around. Last time I had to look for work was in the days when you went for an interview and they just said..."When can you start?".

I guess I'll just be patient and see what happens.
