All decent people are sorry the Komagatu Maru incident occurred, along with various other historical wrongs. However, no-one living today personally shares in any guilt. Learning from History is a good idea, but living with your head stuck in those history books is not.

The Komagata Maru was an important event for many reasons. As a hate crime, or an event of racial abuse, the blood spilled and those killed paled in comparison to to the Jallian Bagh Massacre that occurred at the same time. But for Anglo and Indo-Canadians it was a watershed event that has eventually led to cordial and communal cohabitation.

BLOOD spilled? I never knew people were actually killed. I thought they just fired in its direction to scare them off.

Provisions were not provided to the passengers which led to disease and the eventual death of a few passengers. On land, in Vancouver, violent riots and the killings of two Punjabi informants and the assassination of a high ranking immigration official occurred shortly after the event. When the Komagata Maru returned to India 19 passengers were killed in the ensuing riot which had Canadian laws at the time been followed, the riot would not have occurred.
