We recently bought a fresh sockeye salmon from a grocery store. when we cut it open, about 1/4 of it was a dark purplish colour, like a bruise. We took it back to the store and asked the fish department guy who said he'd seen that before and gave us another one. the second one was mostly ok, but had a small purplish spot inside it too. The fish looked perfectly healthy on the outside - no sign of injury or trauma. Does anyone know what this is?

Sounds like it was bruised during handling or processing then. You can't tell until you fillet it. It's visually unappealing and can taste like blood but it's not harmful.
