Here are some explanations that I've come across to explain her eccentric behaviour in the video:
    - She has medical or psychiatric condition
    - She's on drugs or was drugged by somebody else
    - Her elevator was stuck on one floor and she was trying to get it moving again
    - Missing her glasses so she can't see

That part where she's playing with her hands is definitely weird.

Hope she is found safe. She's a friend of a friend :(.

Elisa Lam is from Vancouver and should know the dangers of a skid row since we have our very own in DTE. It is therefore strange that she would check herself into Cecil Hotel which is in the heart of L.A. skid row.

    RIP... What a tragedy.

Body found, believed to be Elisa Lam, in the one of the hotel's water tanks by a maintenance worker after complaints about low water pressure. Some are questioning if LAPD did an adequate job searching the entire hotel. You would think that the hotel would have surveillance cameras that would have caught something. Hopefully they catch whoever did this.

Our DTES does not compare to the problem areas in the states. If you check tripadvisor, an initial look paints the place as a "nice budget hotel" until you dig deeper into the bad reviews. Some of the bad reviews were posted after this incident by friends of Elisa. I imagine she was just looking for a cheap place to stay and wasn't familiar with LA. It's an easy mistake to make.

These are some of the theories that people on the facebook group came up with to explain the video, posted before the body was found. This one suggests that she was in a state of panic.
This one speculates that she never left the Cecil Hotel.
  5. i just heard about this on the news. condolences to the family.

there is no way she took off her clothes and stuffed herself into a water tank. so many unanswered questions. it had to have been hotel staff or a long term guest. someone who knew how to access the roof and had the necessary keys for doors and service elevators. not to mention tools to open the water tank.

in the video it looked like she was going to or coming from a communal bathroom in the video that's why she didn't have her glasses. my guess is she was being threatened and harassed by someone in the washroom so she panicked and pressed all the buttons on the elevator to hide her floor.

Rest in peace, Elisa. LAPD did not do you justice.

I live in LA and wish the location of Hotel Cecil was reported accurately. It is not on 'skid row'. Skid row is actually a few blocks east. The area around Hotel Cecil is very trendy. It is full of small boutique and vintage stores, trendy cafes and restaurants, nightclubs and TONS of hipsters! Also on the same block and surrounding area are luxury lofts. The fashion district, which is full of shoppers and tourists is also around the corner.

so fucked up. reading the comments on news articles makes me livid! the roof was locked and alarmed, how does one ignorantly think that she stumbled into a water tank naked and then seal herself in?

Earlier news reports put Cecil Hotel inside the skid row. It appears that the hotel is a few blocks away from the skid row. The hotel lobby and staff looks pretty decent from the news video.

My guess is that she was kept captive and murdered in a hotel resident's room. The killer(s) then dumped the body when the police started looking for her. It's a shame.. if only LAPD searched the hotel instead of pulling all the stops for the Chris Dorner, maybe Elisa would be alive today.

News reports said her body was found inside the water tank. Looking at the photos of the tank, it will be quite difficult for a lone person to climb the ladder and haul her body into the tank. Could be the work of more than one person or she was forced to climb up the water tank before being killed.

About her being kept captive and killed in the hotel room, that is also a possibility.

The graffiti in this picture shows the roof is not secure.

I have been following websleuths and they uncovered her social media accounts. The itinerary matches completely and she was planning to do "meetups" lending credence to the theory that she met up with somebody sketchy who may have drugged her. Her profiles seem to indicate ADHD, depression or bipolar disorder, conditions that do not mix with rec drugs!

Seems more like state of panic instead of drug use..

There's a memorial for Elisa set up at her parents' restaurant, Paul's Restaurant (4621 Hastings St.) in Burnaby.

Seems like the armchair detectives are out in full force. I have to say that websleuths is an interesting place. Brilliant analyses with a few conspiracy theories thrown in, especially the one about tuberculosis . I don't think it's suicide, but her last tumblr post is creepy: http://nouvelle-nouveau.tumblr.com/post/42001369468/rcruzniemiec-eugene-soloviev

Could be either or neither. What's interesting is that the video is missing frames according to time stamp. One theory is that the camera is motion activated.

An episode of psychosis, drug induced or otherwise, is definitely possible. She has the risk factors. This post in particular shows her cocktail of medication. http://nouvelle-nouveau.tumblr.com/post/22304102762/more-its-still-odd-to-me-that-people-are-so

Elisa Lam Foul Play Not Determined
    The Huffington Post B.C.

The Los Angeles Police Department has had to deny recent rumours that foul play has been ruled out in the death of Vancouver student Elisa Lam.

On Monday, some media in Vancouver reported that police investigators don't suspect foul play in Lam's death.

However, Alex Martinez, a LAPD public information officer, denied those reports to The Vancouver Sun.
