Local Captain George's Restaurants

There used to be many of them around town but I can't see, to find any of them. I went to the one near Fraser an Marine Drive but the entire building is gone. It was near the wonton place.

Do any of you know of a Captain George's Restaurant.

 

The last Captain George's Restaurant I remember was on Broadway and Victoria Drive beside the Albert's Chicken Chalet but they had closed both back in the 80's. Where was the one at Fraser and Marine? I had lived in that area for years and don't remember one even being there?

 

I have since been told that it closed down and became a car rental place which was torn down some time ago. It was a separate building that was in the same parking lot where the wonton place is. On Marine just before you get to Fraser in the mini mall near the SW corner of Fraser/Marine.

It sounds to me that there are no longer any Captain Georges Restaurants open for business.

 

What type of food did they serve?

 

Burgers and Fish and Chips. I guess the Red Barn on Kingsway is closed as well.

 

Named after Captain George Vancouver?

 

Their menu was similar to Knight & Day. They were known for their Roast Beef on a bun with onion dip.

 

Was that the "Paddle wheeler"?

 

Possibly? I remember the theme of the restaurant was of a Paddle Wheeler Riverboat and they used to serve burgers and fries in Paddle Wheel boats (similar to White Spot's Pirate Pack).

I worked at this place on Victoria 39 years ago. Captain Georges served Beef dips, and burgers similar to White Spot. I think they may have been owned by Nat Bailey, the Original White Spot owner. Alberts Chicken Chalet served fried chicken.

 

when nat bailey sold white spot he was not allowed to be in the restaurant business for a full 7 years( non compete clause) so once the 7 years were up, he opened his new chain which featured pretty much the same burgers as white spot, with triple O sauce

Capt georges was named after George Middlestead a former white spot senior manager
Albert Chicken Chalet was Named after Albert (cannot remember his last name) a former senior manager @Kfc
They hooked up at Harveys Burgers on Main &33rd which had burgers and kfc
The manager at Harveys was Barry Miazga these 3 got together with a company called Acadia managemnt
They opened 3 capt G's
-Marine Drive a block west of Fraser
-Commercial & broadway
-lougheed hwy east of the mall
They also had a fish and chip place in New west
and i believe were involved with the Vancouver Nats a junior A hockey team named after Nat Bailey

 

I remember Captain Georges from when I was little. The Paddle Wheeler boats and such and the wood decor (purple accents too, I think). The building architecture was kind of distinct. My grandparents loved the beef dip. I think there was one in Coquitlam on Barnet. The building is a car dealership.

 

No, not named after George Vancouver. Named for my great-uncle George McVeigh (Paternal Grandmother's little brother) who owned all of the shops. George passed back in the 1980's, but he had sold them off individually in the late 1970's.

 

Next to the lane by St George and Marine, where Subway is now.

 

I remember going to elementary school a few blocks away, and at lunch we would walk to Alberts Chicken Chalet and each get a bag of french fries for 25 or 35 cents and eat them on the way back to school.
