I'm wondering where everybody gets their viet subs? Personally, I prefer the cold cuts at Ba Le over Tung Hing. I grew up with Ba Le so nostalgia could be part of my preference, but then again the product has changed a lot. I remember when they didn't make their own baguettes and would be sold out by afternoon.

Haven't tried Au Petit Cafe yet but it's been on my to do list for years.

Petit cafe's banh mi xiu Mai (meatball) is a must try

I really like Ba le for the same reason but right now I enjoy Kim chau deli subs more their nem nuong(grilled pork) is yum. And it's cheap too
    I hate tunghing's bread

    An update on my preferences:
The bread quality at Ba Le seems to have gone down, but I still enjoy their cold cuts and pâté the most. Small portions for $3.50
Best value and crowd favourite has to be Tung Hing at $3.25 (more filling, bigger sandwich and cheaper). People rave about their bread.
Kim Chau Deli was the cheapest at $3.00 but they skimp on the filling. I wasn't very impressed overall with this one. The girl also took a very long time to make the sandwiches there, she's very chatty.

The above comments are in reference to the special combo (đặc biệt) subs.

I remember when viet subs were only $2.00-$2.75 :(.

A friend told me about DDMau. Looks like overpriced viet subs marketed towards hipsters. Not very authentic looking.

I like Empress Bakery the most but I go to Chong Lee Market a lot because it's close to where I work. It's pretty good too!

Man, the special banh mi at Ba Le has gone up to $4.00 . It's interesting that all of these Viet banh mi places raised prices from $3.50 to $3.75 when the HST came into effect but never decreased it when the HST was removed.

I still think they have the best tasting sub but with the price going up again it's hard to justify it when Tung Hing is around the corner and offers way more sub for your dollar.

On another note, I tried the banh mi at Cafe Xu Hue which was pretty good. It has a spicy sloppy joe type meat mixture which makes it unique. Don't forget to order the bun bo hue if you go there, it's what they're known for.

@Bine Ba Le is in the plaza on Fraser and Kingsway near Sal y Limon. Tung Hing (1198 Kingsway) is a bakery close to Kingsway and Knight. Au Petit Cafe is 4851 Main St.

Thanks for the info. I have seen the one by Sal Y Limon (great place!) but never eaten there. I will have to try these places soon.
