Anyone tired of getting this stuff in the mail? I find it troublesome that UBC provides the organization information about me. Who wants to pay $90 to join a club with other "high achievers"? In addition to the outrageous membership fee, they even try to make you buy overpriced charms, pendants, lapel pins and certificates.

The worst is the letter from UBC's president and vice-chancellor endorsing the society (I bet UBC gets a kickback/commission for every student that signs up).

Reminds me of the telemarketing coercion tactics that UBC uses on students' parents to get them to donate $200 for the library. Sorry, that's low UBC, even for you.

I just got an invite recently and I am going to fork in $90 for this even though I know that it is a legit scam. I will be doing practicum next year and I have been really lacking in extra curricular activities in the past year or two. I'm going to jump on this and use this as a recent resume filler. Hello junk mail!!

As far as I remember, they don;t force you to buy anything...you can check off if you would like to purchase them or not... you simply mail them the form with your preference. I didn't order them and they never bugged me about it, so I am not sure what people are referring to!

The next one is even more humorous! Junk Emails?! I'll think again about that one...Just wondering though if you ever took the chance to read them because they often inform me about their service project opportunities (Live Love Event being the most recent), graduate school workshops, graduate preparation deals, local events (CanCon 2012), international conferences, chapter social events and scholarship opportunities such as the one below that I've received recently:

Golden Key has already awarded over 400 students just like you with a portion of the $1,000,000 in scholarships that are available this year. There are multiple scholarships you can still apply for by the October 1 deadline. You could be one step away from getting a $10,000 check!

Take a look at the numerous scholarships available to you:
Golden Key Community Service Award - $1,000 (5)
Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award - $10,000 (10)
    Golden Key Research Grant - $1,000 (10)
Golden Key Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship - $5,000 (20)
    Education Debt Reduction Award - $5,000 (5)
Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarship - $1,000 (10)
Joan Nelson Study Abroad Scholarship - $2,500 (1)
Do emails such as these look like junk mails??? I personally wouldn't think so!

Nice try, Golden Key Honour Society .

It's a circle-jerk organization made to profit from student and parent egos. They charge ridiculous membership fee in exchange for a CHANCE to win a scholarship. They earn way more from membership fees than they give out. The only thing that might benefit members is the chance to network and the resume pad, but there better (free) ways to do that in a university setting.

The fact that they send unsolicited letters to the top 15% of students makes it spam and junk. They probably give UBC some sort of commission, hence the "personal letter" from UBC's President.

I received an invite back when I was an SFU student. I made up a name and mailed it back with a random number in the credit card field. Sure enough, they wrote back saying that there was an error with the credit card, but my made-up person would receive her membership certificate if I could provide them with a valid card number.

They must be very exclusive if they don't even check the name to see if its even a real person...
