I knit and i'd like to be able to get together once a week and knit with a group - somewhere with nice cosy chairs and you don't have to purchase a coffee or muffin.

Really, one would hope that in a supposedly 'advanced' western country like ours, that there would be places where people can meet. I'd be ok paying somekind of fee. Logically a rec. centre or community centre would be the most obvious locale.

    ideas?

In India, country of my ancestors, they have an interesting concept of place called an STD or an ISD which provides a variety of services. You can rent a computer, phones to make long distance or international calls, use fax machines, copiers and other office facilities. Meanwhile you can buy tea or coffee, snacks, and hang out with friends or family. Similar to an internet cafe in the West.

Public libraries will have meeting rooms available for rent. As will universities and colleges. Most institutions will have locations downtown in addition to their main campuses. Waves Coffee House has meeting rooms at some of their locations: http://wavescoffee.com/coffee-houses/meeting-rooms.

I'd like to see Community Meeting Rooms, in every community/rec centre in the city. Coffee shops aren't enough to facilitate the kind of socialization that healthy human beings need...
