Deported for riding the SkyTrain, racial profiling by Transit Police

Their racial profiling drove Lucia Jimenez to suicide. Do you think Transit Police have too much power?

 

When a psycho, illegal immigrant, from England, chases me down the street and swings a baseball bat at my head for no reason at all, in my own Country, I tend to not want to sympathies with them so much.

She was here illegally, and didn't even pay the fare, which is what got her caught in the first place, and the Transit Police are only doing their job. They also have the power to arrest anyone with a warrant.

A simple $2.75 ticket could have saved her all this grief, at the time, but it doesn't guarentee that she wouldn't eventually end up in immigration prison awaiting deportation.

 

What happened to Jimenez was unfortunate but I think it's a bit of a stretch to attack Transit Police for doing their job.

As far as I know, one of the reasons Transit Police was created was due to jurisdiction and information sharing issues because Translink spans many municipalities. Public transit also tends to be where a lot of mentally ill people hang out. Transit Police has brought in a lot of dangerous psychotic individuals in for treatment.

 

If she had a valid ticket/pass, she would have been fine...

She did not, and then didn't produce valid ID either, so the Transit Police had to verify her identity....

 

Transportation, NOT DEPORTATION! Our public transit system should not be a border checkpoint.

Racial profiling is rampant among Transit Police BC, only 1.5% of those referred to CBSA had immigration warrants out. Constable Jason Schuss who stopped Lucia Vega Jimenez testified that he only reported her to the CBSA because she had an accent.

Transit Police BC is the only armed transit police force in the country. Please note that in the US, police agencies typically refuse to enforce federal immigration laws.

Transit police are trained officers that have the same duties and authority as any other officer. It helps to have officers that can deal with situations in multiple jurisdictions because that's a problem with current municipal departments. Just like other officers, transit police enforce the LAW. Illegal immigration is against the law.

The transit system is NOT a border checkpoint. It is a fare paid zone clearly marked by a yellow line on the floor and by signs overhead. If you fail to pay for a fare, expect a ticket.

 

As tragic as this situation was what police in foreign countries do and do not enforce has nothing to do with Canada.

Jimenez had a job she had money she chose not to pay the fare and so began the unfortunate chain of events-she was 100% the author of her own misfortune.

 

... suicide? that's the government's story! in actual fact she was MURDERED by the authorities! no one should be killed for riding the skytrain and if you say otherwise you're a moron!

... and yes, the police DO have way too much power! take away their guns for starters!
