I know some folks will call me racist, and I myself am a person of color. But it annoys me to see producers playing fast and loose with tradition in the service of political correctness. First, on the Smallville series in the previous decade, they turn Clark Kent's pal Pete Ross into a black person. Now on the Flash they have turned Barry Allen's girlfriend black.

Why not just make up new characters and have them be black? For example, Cloe Sullivan in Smallville never existed in Silver Age Superboy comics. So why not make Cloe black and leave Pete Ross blond and freckled? I have no problem with black people, Jewish persons, anyone, being important in these shows. Just don't tamper with existing mythology.

If I write a book on US history, am I supposed to re-write facts and make Abraham Lincoln a Hindu just because I am descended from those people? I mean, I know these characters are fictitious but don't tamper with established canon! Just create new input.

These original stories and characters were written at a time where they likely wouldn't have been published unless these characters were white. Times have changed and there is also a new generation of people who didn't know the original stories. Probably not just the race of characters have changed, but also some of the story lines have also, to make them more relevant for these present times. If you look at other works of fiction, remakes often change the original story somewhat and it is not limited to just the race of some of the characters. I think for the most part, it works fairly well.

You are comparing works of fiction to historical facts. I don't have a problem with changing a story to make it more modern. I've seen different versions of Little Red Riding Hood. The Lord of the Rings movies is different from the book. Maybe traditionalists complain about changes, but for the most part, people have no issues with changes in the retelling of works of fiction.

I guess it all depends on what you care about, Stuntman. Ultimately it is up to the copyright holders. But this constant monkeying with established stories really bugs me, and I also have my free speech rights to criticize it.

Also, Stuntman, to some extent my anger is against things having swung from one extreme to the other. Today, too many talk as if whiteness is something to apologize for. Baloney! White people are like my adopted family and have given me so much love and help. Diversity? I am all for it if it is done in a positive way. But if diversity is understood to mean knocking down whiteness, this person of color will have no part of it.

Europeans are to the modern world what Russians were to the Soviet Union, or Romans to the world that Jesus Christ knew. Yes, they did their share of wrong. But they are the white grout which holds the tiles of the mosaic together. When seeking the progress of other ethnicities, include the white people with goodwill and enthusiasm.

    The Flash

In the comics Barry Allen is suppose to marry Iris West. Iris's brother will be Kid Flash. On the TV series Iris is black and doesn't have a brother. We all know time travel is possible though. The Flash will travel back in time to try and save his mother from Reverse Flash aka Dr.Wells? Or is it Iris's boyfriend Eddie who will become Reverse Flash? Eddie have the same last name as The Reverse Flash/Man in yellow suit as in the comics. He might go evil when Barry finally get to be with Iris.

    Arrow

The Lazarus Pit exist. Ra's Al Gul said that the last time he was challenged to a dual was 67 years ago. The guy look 50. He's been using the Lazarus Pit to slow his aging. The same Pit that can cure and heal wounds. Might even be able to bring the dead back from the dead as long as their body was not buried.

If you dig deep into the comic book world, you'll see established stories rehashed over and over with multiple universes and timelines. The new television and movie adaptations are just an extension of this, new takes on old stories and characters from the 1930s to 1950s.

Ra's Al Gul was a Batman character. The dual between Oliver and Ra's Al Gul probably never happened in the comics. Oliver has to come back or else the show wouldn't be able to go on as Arrow. Only the Lazarus Pit can save him. Oliver will finally embrace his true destiny as The "Green Arrow".
