is anyone else using it? Yes it has the Start Up menu displayed on the desktop....but what is missing? any Office products that's what. No Word, Outlook, Excel, stuff that you used to get when you purchased Windows.

... do you mean as opposed to pre-windows 8? or are you saying you don't like 8.1 compared to 8?

... i don't like the new start screen, it's really just a bunch of advertisements. however, i do find web surfing to be more stable than it ever has been before. and since i love to go online, for that reason i'll give it a thumbs up ...

yes exactly. The Start Up menu is nothing but advertising right in your face, on the desktop. So now, the desktop is not your own. Im trying to configure my email but in order to do that with Telus which is a POP server, I need to use Outlook which no longer comes with the purchase of Windows 8.1. I am being told I need to sign in to Microsoft before I can activate email on my own fing computer. So I need a Microsoft Account in order to have email on my laptop. Me thinks this might be going right back to LD shortly. Anyone using Linux? I think ive now had it with Windows.

... interesting. have you considered using an e-mail provider other than microsoft? sounds like you should try one of the free services like aol or gmail ...

... the thing that gets me a little bit about windows 8 is how on the start page they list a whole series of things that come with your computer. however, when you click on them you then find out that a good lot of them (a) require internet to access and (b) require you to purchase the thing they're displaying. so it's like false advertising ...

. So it turns out I cannot purchase Outlook 8.1. Now what I have to do is to sign into a Micro Soft server called 'Outlook' , using my MS account info. From there I can see all of my emails and send and manage emails remotely, from their server, from my laptop. Pretty shady not stating this change from the outset anywhere but leaving users to figure it out. Does this mean I have to sign in every time I want to access my email now? so i cannot even view my emails unless and until i sign in to Outlook. No one asked me if I wanted my emails stored on a Micro Soft server....

...but was Windows 8 ever any good?

I'm still using Windows 2000/XP, and have a copy of Windows 7 sitting in the drawer.

Wasn't planning to upgrade anytime soon.

I love windows 8.1. You know you can set it to boot straight into the desktop screen instead of the start menu. I never use the start menu on my windows 8.1. Outlook? What is this, 2005? It is old just like MSN Messenger that teenagers never even heard of these days. Telus and shaw emails are terrible. Get yourself a Gmail.

I'm on Windows 7 which I'm happy with. Vista was terrible. So far the trend has been that every other Microsoft Windows version has been terrible. It's alternates with every release (not including Server and Business versions).

    Windows 3.1x (1992) - Good
Windows 95 (1995) - Sucked initially but improved
    Windows 98 (1998) - Good
Windows ME (2000) - Sucked hard
    Windows XP (2001) - Good
    Windows Vista (2006) - Sucked
    Windows 7 (2009) - Good
Windows 8 (2012) - Sucked initially but improved
