It's not just housing that's affected by mainland China. Local seafood has gotten significantly more expensive over the last several years because much of it is exported rather than sold locally. Apparently BC seafood is in hot demand among the nouveau riche in Asia.

I can remember a time when BC Spot Prawns were $6.99/lb now they're $16.99/lb. Dungeness crab used to always be cheaper than lobster, now it's on par with lobster. There are even times when crab costs more than lobster.

While not local, the price of Alaskan King Crab is no longer affordable for most people. Restaurants used to sell them at $8.88 to $15 a lb, not it's $36-70/lb.

Besides Geoduck, the price of our local mussels and clams don't seem to be affected much but I was surprised to find out how much of it goes to the international market:
Should we be exporting so much of our seafood?

Sure as long as we can produce enough for the domestic market.

They do this with peaches and cherries too. Companies make much more in exports apparently.
