food poisoning aid

    So I get a bad bout of food poisoning about 3 times a month lately it seems. Yeah,cutbacks in food inspection here in Vancouver is part of the problem probably. Anyways when I start having sulfur smelling burps, followed by intestinal churning and gurgling, I know what i'm in for. So, after emptying my bowels completely ie. watery diarrhea etc I do these things:

    • replace lost electrolytes. They call it 'dehydration' but your body loses much more than water after a terrible bout of diarrhea. It loses minerals: salt, potassium and more.... You can just down a Gatoraid or other sports drink. I like to put some salt in apple juice. Drink a lot, like a litre if you can
    • it's sometimes a good idea to make sure all the toxic shit, literally, is fully out of your system so you can take some Epsom salt in water, about half a teaspoon of the food quality stuff. This is a known laxative and will clean you out if there's anything remaining
    • Eat bananas and oatmeal for a couple of days to be easy on your digestive system
    • If you have a prolonged fever with sweating, bloody stools, kidney pain etc then you should see a dr. for antibiotics potentially

    Have you seen your family doctor? It may be more than just food poisoning.

    Sulfur burps


    It's food poisoning ......ie pathogenic bacterial contamination of food. I"m trying pro biotics at the moment and getting some interesting results ie. my sense of smell dramatically intensifying. Some info says it's Giardia contamination ie. a parasite

    "Giardiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the single celled organism Giardia. Expect some combination of diarrhea, bloating, vomiting and nausea. Also, sulphur smelling burps – this is one of the most commonly reported symptoms with giardiasis. Long-term infections can cause weight loss, malnutrition and loss of appetite. Giardiasis may be less alarming than other intestinal infections (like say,amoebic dysentery), but it is still a major intestinal infection that could end up being a complete nightmare.'

    "Giardia can also be found in food that has not been prepared in a hygienic matter. Make sure to eat food that has been well cooked/boiled, and if you are eating fruits and vegetables make sure they have not come in contact with contaminated water."

    What I don't understand is that I cook everything thoroughly and wash all fruit and veg with a salt wash so I really do not understand how some cooked prawns I ate gave me Giardia....they did smell bad even after they'd been cooked so I guess cooking doesn't always make food safe?

    Speaking as someone who works in the healthcare field, please see your doctor. If your doctor is the type that will brush it off (which is sadly not uncommon), find a doctor who will take you seriously.

    There are a million things inside and outside the gut that can cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Some are more serious than others. Since it's been going on for a while, it's prudent to get it checked out. Your doctor would order investigations to figure it out. They can do stool testing to check for bacteria or parasites like giardia. A breath test to check for H. pylori (another cause of "sulfur burps") can be done. Blood tests can check for systemic and inflammatory illnesses as well as celiac disease etc.

    That is true.

    1. Some toxins produced by bacteria are heat stable meaning that even though the bacteria has been killed by heat, the toxins are still there to make you sick.
    2. Some bacteria, viruses and parasites are quite resistant to heat. To kill pathogens, the temperature has to be high enough and stay at that temperature long enough. It depends on your cooking method.

    Another bout of sulphur burps. This time it was from some take out french fries from a well known fast food place. I do not know how they could have been contaminated with guardia but i guess they are. BTW, the last bout cleared up in a few days with some probiotics and electrolytes (salt in apple juice.)
