Why don't Canadian retailers have layaway or layby here?

Layaway or layby is when a store reserves an item for a customer until they complete all necessary payments. You essentially finance your purchase through installments but you don't get to take home the product until it's paid off.

They have layaway in the States but I guess it's not something that caught on in Canada. Are you aware of any stores that will allow layaway purchases?

I've worked @ places that did it but customers were a PITA -missing payments/asking for money back and the goods were sitting there not getting any younger.

Remember goods generally need to be paid for in 30 days so the retailer is actually financing the purchase-why not let someone's credit card company do the job instead?
