Harper is a fundamentalist Christian who idenifies closely with the fundamentalist crazies down south. But you would never know it from what he says. He doesn't say boo about gay marriage, in fact a glitch in the gay marriage laws of Canada that could leave gay couples in limbo was fixed in a week or two. He will not mention the word 'abortion', and the backbencher who came up with the free vote as to when life begins will be a backbencher forever in a Harper government. He's a right wing fundie, but he's a very pragmatic right wing fundie.

He's a right wing fundie, but he's a very pragmatic right wing fundie. The last leader in BC to wear his religion on his sleeve was the Zalmer who single-handledly destroyed the SC party. In short, Canadians want politicians to be pragmatic politicians, not religious zealots.

Added: In short, adding the crazy religious, cultural wars crap tends to amp up the emotions in the US vote, and by essentially removing it from Canadian politics it tends to amp it down. As boring as this makes our elections in Canada I far prefer it to the craziness that goes on in America come election time.
