Should be able to find out who owns the MacBook

Saw this ad on Craigslist. The campus police or the advertiser should make some effort in locating the owner of the MacBook. Simple efforts like putting up posters, advertising in the campus newspaper, posting at CraigsList's Lost & Found etc.

If that fails, a review of the files in the hard drive should reveal who is using the MacBook. Does the MacBook's computer name provides a clue who the owner is? Does the MacBook's email client provides an email address that the advertiser can reach out to? What about the email client's address book? Can the advertiser contact the people in the address book to let the owner know his MacBook has been found?

What ISP is the MacBook configured on? What is the user name for this ISP? Contact the ISP with the username to find out who owns the MacBook?

What about the documents in the hard drive? Is there a Word document of certain subject's course assignment in the hard drive? Contact the subject eg. HIST101 instructor? Let the instructor know that his/her student MacBook has been found? Likely, the Word document would have the student's name on the document. Contact the student?

The guy who turned the macbook in is being paranoid. He won't be tracked down by the Fbi or whoever if the original owner decides to report it. This is not a terrorist attack. Hundreds of macbooks go missing or gets stolen everyday. Why in the world would the feds care about some random dude or girl who lost their toy.

I agree, it's pure laziness on part of the involved parties. The person who found it is a scumbag. They should have turned it into the library as a lot of people don't think to look elsewhere. Going to the police is odd since it's typically campus security that handles lost and founds.

I wouldn't be surprised if the founder was trying to maximize the chance of keeping the laptop especially in light of how he/she wants to bypass tracking features which are designed to help owners locate missing/stolen laptops .
