    14/02/2017 02:01 Nuclear-weapon-free zones by Tim Wright

As we approach the UN negotiations for a global prohibition on nuclear weapons, what can we learn from regional prohibitions that already exist? Susi Snyder of PAX in the Netherlands explores this question in her latest blog post.

Nuclear-weapon-free zone treaties cover all of Latin America and the Caribbean, the South Pacific, Africa, Southeast Asia and Central Asia. In 2015, Reaching Critical Will and Article 36 published a useful chart comparing the elements of each zone.

Snyder argues that these treaties provide a baseline for next month's negotiations. "States will need to go figure out how to deal with some of the differences that have emerged in the 50 years of regional nuclear weapon prohibitions."

... nuclear weapons bans? yes, absolutely! but what about the weapons they are presently assaulting us with all the time? things like electromagnetic attacks and voice-to-skull transmissions! electronic harassment must be outlawed in canada now!

And while the Trudeau team is very worked up about chemical weapons, they seem strangely unconcerned about nuclear ones.

Indeed, the Trudeau government is breaking a long-standing and worthy Canadian practice by snubbing important new UN negotiations aimed at nuclear disarmament."

The new talks, involving more than 120 nations, have been hailed as the most significant development in nuclear disarmament in two decades. They were launched in New York late last month — with Canada refusing to participate."

"The NDP will force a vote in Parliament next week to test the Liberal government’s commitment to nuclear disarmament in light of Canada’s vote against UN talks. NDP Foreign Affairs critic, Hélène Laverdière, is proposing a motion calling on the Liberals to commit to attending future meetings of the United Nations conference to work towards the elimination of nuclear weapons. With the second round of negotiations beginning next week, the debate in Parliament is timely."
