Many news outlets, including www.news1130.com are reporting that TransLink is preparing to offer up FREE Transit on BC Day, August 4th...

This is in response to the two- 5 hour shut downs on SkyTrain in just 4 days...

They should offer refunds on monthly passes instead or how about some Compass credit?

Well, If Compass was fully operational they could refund the fares from any particular day or time period, but we are about a year away from that....

Maybe Translink should stop spending money on stuff like the poodle statue and focus on getting Compass fully functional :p.

... is translink the same as bc transit? will this be province-wide free bus rides?

No... TransLink was created specifically for Metro Vancouver, to replace the old BC Transit governance in Metro Vancouver...

Officially, TransLink is known as The South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority....

... they're not both overseen/funded by the british columbia government?

Translink funds municipal road and bridge infrastructure as well. Here's a map of what they cover.
    • Knight Street Bridge
    • Pattullo Bridge
    • Golden Ears Bridge
    • Westham Island Bridge
    • Canada Line bike and pedestrian bridge.
TransLink also owns and operates a number of bicycle infrastructure assets, including the BC Parkway and bike lockers.

Some of the major projects get funded like 33% from the BC government....

But the day to day budget comes from fares, the 17 cents a litre gas tax, the small BC Hydro levy and the small property taxes...

Oh, and I forgot the parking taxes...
