B.C. minimum wage $10.25 by 2012

    Today - $8.00
    May 1, 2011 - $8.75
    November 1, 2011 - $9.50
    May 1, 2012 - $10.25

    Training wage is also gone! Separate lower wage for alcohol servers.

    The minimum wage in British Columbia is going up, Premier Christy Clark announced Wednesday. Clark said the minimum wage will increase in increments, starting with a jump to $8.75 per hour on May 1 from the current rate of $8 per hour.

    I should be happy, but I get paid 8.78 and I've been there for 2 years.
    I really do wonder if there's going to be jobs left after this comes in to affect because it's already hard enough to find a job with employers willing to pay more than $8/hr.

    Seems like Christy Clark is trying to win some votes. I'm not sure about the potential economic implications, but it seems small businesses will be taking most of the hit. Bigger companies and chains can easily absorb the cost associated with the wage increase.

    Training wage was garbage, good riddance.

    It's funny cause waiters/waitresses have been claiming for years about how they should be tipped highly because their wage was lower than minimum wage. Of course, that argument didn't apply to British Columbia. That didn't stop them from using it as fodder though, eventually it just became a huge misconception. With the separate wage for liquor servers, their argument might be legitimate for once.

    whats the difference between someone doing retail and someone serving, should we tip someone for helping us find the right size of pants? I'm fine with tiping someone for good service but I'm tried of it being expected... on some bills they expect up to 20 %... so the employers don't want to give them a decent wage so they expect their paying customers to make up the difference, I don't get it. I'm glad the min. wage has gone up but for all the people who had started at min. wage and then moved up with years of employment does that mean their wage will go up as well.. the last time there was a wage increase it didn't help me... people who stared a yr or two after me were know making the same as me.. in the end it doesn't really matter because the gov't taxes us to death while giving themselves good pensions and expense accounts..

    ^The difference is that the restaurant industry has been traditionally tip-based here. Just tip however you want. IMO people get their panties in a knot trying to enforce a non-standardized set of rules that no one can agree on. 15%? 20%? drinks included? pre-tax? post-tax?

    Most servers are nice, but there are some servers that just expect a tip and give you crap service. In those cases, I don't tip at all. I had one waitress that rolled her eyes at my table when we were sorting out the bill, so she got a bunch of pennies. Some people still tip for bad/non-existent service because they don't want to look cheap or feel embarrassed, but that defeats the purpose of gratuities.

    I thought i was the only one left wondering what happens to the people who make more than minimum? Hardly seems fair to give someone who just started a raise to what an employee is making when they have been with the company for years.

    Hardly seems fair that employers don't up their f%$#ing salaries when inflation goes up.

    My exact thoughts.

    So if I'm making $12.00 at the bank till, I am not getting a raise but those who are serving me McDonald's are getting a wage of $10.25? For wait, serving me McDonalds? I hardly think punching the "Big Mac" button at the counter counts as doing math/work. No offence to anyone but I think this min. wage is ridiculous.

    A better solution would have been increase of $0.50 to every wage so that we have a more "fair" approach.

    While that would be nice, there's no way to mandate that. It would also be a disincentive for companies to offer good wages in the first place (not to mention bonuses and annual raises) because they'd worry about the next mandatory increase.
