Hi all. I'm thinking of moving to Vancouver on a working holiday visa. I've previously taught kindergarten in Australia where I was getting $30/hour but I've noticed BC wages are nowhere near this - the top I've noticed is $20, is that considered a GOOD wage?! I'm also qualified as a primary school teacher, is ther better money in that? I've heard Vancouver is expensive to live and I'm not sure how I will survive on $20/hour if that's the case?!

Also have any foreign teachers come to Canada and had to have their qualifications assessed?? What is the procedure to go about this and how long does it take usually? Is there a teachers union?
    Thanks in advance

Public School teachers belong to the BC Teachers Federation (Union). I don't know if Private School Teachers have a union or not.

You might find more interaction (both positive and negative) over at www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/new/

www.metrovancouver.org/ hires every January for Spring & Summer "PARKS" workers at nearly $27 hr???

BC Ferries hires extra Spring & Summer staff every February and many start at the $20 an hour range.

You might find the occasional Summer camp type jobs listed over at www.civicinfo.bc.ca/careers/

I think this will be challenging if not impossible. There is a huge oversupply of teachers currently in BC. Many new grads do not find jobs or are underemployed. For those that do obtain jobs when they graduate, it's not uncommon for them to stay in a TOC (Teacher On Call / Substitute) position for years and years before getting their own classroom.

BC is notoriously bad for recognizing foreign credentials. You may want to consult the TRB for steps on how to do this: https://www.bcteacherregulation.ca/ for information. Education requirement and credentials are quite different in BC, even compared to other parts of Canada).

If you are a certified teacher (K-12), you will be making more than $20/hour for sure. However, that's if you can even get a job which many local teachers can't despite years of trying.

You may have better luck in the private sector but wages and working conditions can be variable: http://www.educationcanada.com/

    Best of luck!

    Hello colleagues!
I would never have imagined I could enjoy online tutoring so much but my experience with Find Tutoring Jobs has been fantastic. People look for tutors for all sorts of reasons - to boost their chances at exams ... Tutors provide educational assistance to those who struggle in certain subjects. There are several job options for those who want to go into this industry. http://find-tutoring-jobs.com/ You can write any questions about work you have or ask your colleagues how they like to work with a company. I wish cood luck to everyone!
