Was glancing at the Current Conditions section on the TransLink website yesterday afternoon: Bus #104 & 410 were experiencing traffic delays of up to 120 minutes!! Crazy! The fall rain storms haven't even hit yet!

Noticed a new INTERNAL (existing employees only) posting for more Customer Information Clerks! $22.13hr out at Gateway in Surrey.

I think Richmond will be posting for more ops soon! Lot's of uncovered work (OT) on the overnight assignments.

Today I worked in North Van for my first time. I really enjoyed it, the people are so nice and the routes were good also. Too bad there isn't anything around Phibbs exchange to grab a coffee or a bite to eat. I had 25 mins of recovery at one point, would've been perfect to grab a coffee. Oh well!!

Hello! Might I ask you to help educate us a little about Shuttle?

    How many shifts per week?

Routes or region you get assigned the most?

    Early shifts? Late shifts?

How often does your phone ring with extra shifts?

Socialize much with coworkers? Any payday activities?

Things you enjoy the most? Least?

Would you rather be a driver, or work in an office?

It's funny, I never really cared much for North Van work but I realize now it's very peaceful there lol!

Yeah Phibbs is pretty dull but there is a Wendy's and A&W a block away and a McD's 2 blocks away. Their coffee is better than Timmy's anyway in my opinion! :p

Isn't it all OT out there? lol, I finally did something other than a 410 this sheet... a 430. It was surprisingly good...much better than the 410. On the 410 I was constantly 10-15 min down each trip. Crazy!

Got a nice little break for the last part of my shift doing a 104 and a 128. Nice and quiet (although learning new routes in the dark is fun! lol)

The one thing I noticed out in RIchmond is that the traffic lights seem to be incredibly long. Get stuck at a couple and soon you're 4-5 min behind.

Speaking of LONG lights; just wait for a fire hall controlled light!

I noticed that @Superchecker posted some questions about Shuttle work above and since I've been a Shuttle operator for almost a year now, I thought I'd give those questions a try. Here are my thoughts:
    • How many shifts per week? - Right now, I work a regular 5 days a week with 2 days off. Back when I first started as a casual, I would only get about 2-4 shifts a week. I was a bit picky about locations and work times then so maybe that's why I only got a few shifts. Later on, I got more shifts by choosing more locations and times to work.
    • Routes or region you get assigned the most? - When I first started, I got assigned to PoCo a lot. It was unpleasant learning new routes in the dark and rain, lol.
    • Early shifts? Late shifts? - I prefer the late shifts. It's so much easier to drive at night with little traffic and passenger volume.
    • How often does your phone ring with extra shifts? - I can't remember exactly how often I got a call but after becoming reduced (part-time), I was able to get what I signed up for online so I didn't get a phone call anymore.
    • Socialize much with coworkers? Any payday activities? - I just have a few talks with coworkers that start around the same time as I am. There isn't much time for me to chat with them during work.
    • Things you enjoy the most? Least?
      - Enjoy the most
      : AM/FM radio, Air conditioning.
      - Least: 24 passenger limit, narrow streets (shuttle routes seems to go through more narrow streets compared to conventional routes), no travel time, no premiums, it takes longer to load/secure/unload strollers, scooters, and wheelchairs compared to conventional buses.
    • Would you rather be a driver, or work in an office? - Driver for sure! :fyeah:

    Hi Guys.

I am currently at the reference checking stage of the recruitment process for conventional operator and hoping to do the medical soon.

So this question may sound a bit strange considering I am not even in the door yet. Down the line, in two or three years hope to move to Vancouver Island with my family, so if I get hired in Vancouver is there a process where by one could apply for an internal transfare to the island or would I have to start the whole process fresh with BC Transit on the island?

    Thanks for any help.

Hey all, been a little bit since I checked in.

I think i'm done my probation about now! Its hard to tell exactly, but i'm 20 weeks into driving so i'm likely done :)!

After going straight to BTC out of training in May I ended up in VTC once the September sheet began.

I was nervous to drive Trolleys as It had been a while, and I hadn't driven one of my own before.

Nonetheless, I figured it out pretty quickly! and Im enjoying having a regular routine with no split work.

Doing night work (Except for Sunday) 16 on Monday Tuesday, 14 on Friday and a 3 on Saturday + Sunday.

Fridays are hectic!! but every other day of the week is enjoyable.

    Hope everyone's doing well.

Good to hear it's going well! I ran into a couple of those "straight to BTC" guys last sheet when I was still there and they were not happy! lol

Probationary period is (was?) 675 hours. You can see how many hours you have on your paystub.

I shudder to think what would happen if I had to drive a trolley again. Overhead down everywhere. A trail of disaster in my wake! lol
