It's been awhile so I don't remember clearly, but the 4pm thing sounds about right. As far as I recall, that was when they TRIED to have assignments done and online.

BUT! I seem to recall many times, due to dispatch being busy or some other issue, work wasn't posted til later, so I ALWAYS checked before bed and in the morning. C.Y.A. I guess.

And as a casual, technically speaking, if you put your availability as all day, not am or pm, you could be assigned or called for a 4am start after you went to bed! yuk. I think it's changed somewhat now, but more recent shuttle people might be able to clarify.

 

I was called in for work in the middle of the night as well back when I was a casual. It doesn't seem to happen very often (or not at all) though if you make yourself available for "All Day" or be in the ADP as they seem most likely to get work assigned to them ahead of time.

 

The union met with the company on May 26th and we haven't heard any news from them. I'm hearing rumours that a possible agreement may have been reached. Does anyone have any more info on this?

 

Nothing definitive from anyone I've talked to other than things were "positive". Although I heard they were still talking apparently late into the evening on the 26th and then the 27th, which seems to support that. No update yet from the union in this case is probably a good thing if they're preparing something for us to ratify?

Yup. When my availability opened up and I was basically "all day, every day" as a casual, then later, on ADP, my schedule was almost always up a long time in advance (several weeks if I recall). I was also able to get lots of extra shifts if I wanted.

Ironically, once I got an index of my own (reduced and full-time), it was much harder to get extra hours due to the schedule I had, but it was more important to get that seniority number and benefits going.

 

There was an unofficial post on the Union Facebook page that an agreement is imminent.

It's been quiet in here lately! I guess that means everyone is out enjoying their new work! I also wonder if the number of newbies applying may be down a bit?

Local Signup has started this week and I'm told that 3 weeks Monday, the Consolidated signup goes ahead. It's early this year because of the new Hamilton Transit Centre opening/North Van closing and a lot of shuffling of personnel and routes means extra training for staff and drivers. Fun times ahead!

 

Hearing of at least 6 older Op's retiring or already retired out of Richmond.

Richmond sign up starts June 6. 400 Ops over 5 days. I am on day #1.

Go to www.translink.ca/careers and THEN "Bus Operator Opportunities"; Under Qualifications it says they will review the last 5 years of your driving experience.

I would suggest applying anytime. If you don't make it thru the process then you will be instructed to wait 6/12 months before re applying.

Occasionally other opportunities pop up that could help you get your foot in the door! I worked in 2 other departments before switching to driving.

I only had my class 5 for 2 years when I applied and ultimately got hired. I don't even recall them asking how long I've had it for.

They will ask you how long you've been driving, whether you drive regularly, and if you've had any incidents. They'll have you submit your abstract and claim history as well.

Another 4 new/junior Op's have transferred out to Richmond and are doing their 3 days of route training. That's like at least 14 over the past month?

 

Hi guys. I applied for conventional driver trainee back in May 7th (the job post was closed on May 9th). I still did not get an email back for the video test. When I log into the careers website I can see my application as in process. Anybody can tell how long can it take for them to send the email for the video test? I have 5 years experience as an Edmonton bus driver but I am applying from outside the city so I hope that is not a problem for Translink.

 

I applied the last week of October and got the email for the video test about a month later. You should hear back next week. The whole hiring process can be very slow it took 7 months from applying to getting my offer letter.

But seriously he's right, it can take a while. It took several months when I applied for shuttle, then when I went to conventional it was ~6 months from application to training.

 

They have just reposted for MORE Community Transit Service (Shuttle) Operator Trainees! Part time or even just casual to start. They start at a about $19 an hour and climb to almost $25 an hour (April 2015 rates). Temps earn 14 % MORE in place of benefits.
