So I cannot play music that I have paid for and downloaded from itunes now unless I read their 'new and improved' 100 page contract and click 'agree'. WTF?

I have paid for and downloaded these tunes and now I cannot play them from my own hard drive? This is music that I have been able heretofore to play over and over again...but not today.

Welcome to the Cloud people. What is going on? Almost impossible to contact Apple by email these days to ask.

This is what I see when I double click now on any of my tunes that I bought a long time ago from Itunes:

"The itunes Terms and conditions have changed. To proceed, you must read and accept the new terms and conditions (very long and legally complex document) "

    ok cancel.

... you're right, total frickin' bullshit, flutterby. you are justified in your anger ...

... my beef with tech is how you have to register most software programs on the internet before you can use them. this is difficult for me since my PC isn't connected to the web. and in many cases the boxes the software comes in doesn't say that a web connection is required to use the program. this kind of bait and switch game-playing is completely illegal and it shows that consumers aren't protected by regulation of the software industry ...

... i mean, how many other products do you know of that you have to REGISTER online before you can use them???

Can I listen to my downloaded music from Itunes, offline? I have never done it but I have just always asumed that I could. But now i'm thinking i'll bet i cannot.

There needs to be a warning that even though you buy and download a tune, you cannot play it offline.

I'm glad I don't use iTunes to manage my music on my PC. I'm wary of cloud services that manage my music. I keep my music on MP3's on my PC.

    I don't use Cloud storage.
I use my own hard drive or external drive to store my media files (from iTunes or other) as well but I use vlc media player or real player without a problem.

Seriously, I need to know how to get my music back from itunes who have hijacked it. Are these not mp3's? Is there a way to actually download these to my desktop ? Because I'm thinking that my music list is actually not even really 'there' like I thought it was, rather it is available when I want to listen to it (or it used to be anyway.)

I bought those songs under whatever terms and conditions that applied then so I should be able to listen to them now. They should be 'mine.' But now they want to retro-actively apply new terms and conditions to something that was already supposed to be mine, before I can listen again.

... yes it's wrong, flutterby. they can't just change the terms of a contract like that ...

... i was reading a magazine about pro video gear yesterday and it had an article that dealt with a similar conundrum. in the united states many wireless microphones for video recording are becoming illegal to use because the frequencies they utilize are being handed over to cell phone companies. that to me is just nuts! it just isn't right to be able to prohibit the use of something that was purchased legally. and it's similar to what you're talking about with itunes, the way they're arbitrarily changing the rules. they shouldn't be allowed to do that!

I downloaded the free U2 album from iTunes to my computer. iTunes on your computer should give you that option.
