I think it's just a case of getting your foot in the door. Once there the opportunities abound!

Let's just say that people do move around... It does involve switching unions, but it does happen... I was originally in the office union for over 3 years before switching to the drivers union....

There are drivers who did other jobs at transit first...

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew how long it takes to get called back after you obtain your class 2 learners for conventional operator. I have done my video test, interview, driving test and was told to obtain a learners in which I did. Should I be worried?

I think there is a bit of a wait right now... Some existing Shuttle drivers have been waiting since last August for training dates for Conventional...

Right now they are only running Training classes of approx 8 Conventional Trainees every 4 weeks...

Alot is riding on that Transit vote, as well as how many current drivers hired before 1980 will retire this year (Pension changes)...

    Hi,
I have applied for conventional operator and have finished all my steps except for my medical. My medical is now booked for the up coming week. How long does it take from that step to be contacted and hired?

    Thank you

Depends on how many new drivers they want... Currently existing employees have been waiting since last summer for training dates... Training roughly 8 new Conventional drivers a month.. I've known some who have waited 18 months... A lot riding on this Transit Vote...

Hypothetically speaking, if one was to apply for one, or both of these jobs, and got it, would that make it easier to get into BCRTC as a SkyTrain Attendant if an opening came available there, i.e. is this a good way to get your foot in the door?

Like @Superchecker mentioned a couple of times, apply for anything just to get your foot into Translink so that way you'll gain access to internal job postings.

Existing transit employees have access to an employees only website which often lists internal job vacancies not open to the general public... As well some publicly listed jobs are temp status while internal postings can be regular status sometimes...

If you didn't already know, I started here with a 3 month temp job which turned into 6 months, which then I applied for a different longer term temp job which lead to regular status, which lead to full time, and then in the early 90's they were hiring more drivers...

Many here do move around or climb the corporate ladder... We have a career development department...

I applied back in November as Community shuttle. Switched my application to Convetional earlier this year (did it at the right time). I have to redo my medical soon.

Training starts mid June! Looking forward to this career change. I'm setting me sights to becoming a driving instructor. Here's to hoping! Good luck everyone. If you have any questions about the application process let me know! I'll tell you what I can.

General question, during the video testing on 50 scenarios that transit drivers have to deal with on a daily basis, how should one approach all the questions over all?

Yeah! Best of luck! Lots of posts from "ConventionalMan" who switched from Shuttle to Conventional a few months ago...

Training is a pretty "intense" 6 weeks... Then the spareboard for the summer, Sign Up mid August for the Sept to Dec sheet... Vacation sign up for all of 2016 in late Sept or early October...
You'll get 3 weeks vacation for the first 7 years: with Annual OPTIONS to bank up to 2 weeks of stats and up to 2 weeks worth of overtime for MORE time off...

Common sense. Bus oporators aren't police officers; They use resources to help them out in difficult situations. Go in the test knowing that oporators need to avoid confrontations.

Thanks for the feedback! That's how I approached the video test the last time I did it but some of the scenes were a bit confusing when you try to avoid "confrontation"

An example would be a passenger listening to loud music on their headphones, or a passenger that smells really bad coming into the bus.
