There continues to be an ongoing active posting looking for 8 GENERAL SECURITY PATROL- CASUAL POOL, and now a **NEW** posting up today looking for 2 FULL TIME TEMP GENERAL SECURITY PATROL Officers... Approx $22 an hour to start... I would assume "temp" means an extra 20% instead of benefits... ("Regular" status = paid benefits)

www.translink.ca/drive and THEN "Coast Mountain Bus Company" if interested...

Ran into one of the Instructors/Trainers yesterday... hadn't seen him in quite awhile... He said that there is a current training class of 6 Conventional, but wasn't sure when the next class was planned for...

Also mentioned that quite a few (6?) of the senior/life long Instructors had retired over the past year....

And I'll mention again: Although no driving jobs posted as of this date, there are approx 20 ACTIVE job postings up now at TransLink, about 10 MORE at Coast Mountain Bus, about 10 MORE at BCRTC-SkyTrain, 1 MORE each at WCE; Transit Police; HandyDART & ProTransBC.... www.translink.ca/drive

www.metrovancouver.org has seasonal "PARKS" jobs now- $25 an hour...

BC Ferries hires their annual seasonal staff soon as well... $19-25 an hour...

Home Depot is hosting a Careers Fair the next 2 Fridays down at their Terminal Ave location. They also have a website with a careers section....

www.civicinfo.bc.ca/16.asp is ALWAYS worth checking out!

Funny you mention this today... I just received confirmation today: My move from Shuttle to conventional training begins February 2! Exciting times! I have also heard (ymmv) another class starts February 29th. Last I heard, they were only allowing 2 Shuttle ops per class of new hires (last class had 6 students I think) and that there were somewhere between 15-20 shuttle operators alone waiting to move up.

Edit: I suppose I need to change my name now!

Good luck!! But it's not as easy as it looks...training is very stressful and getting used to trolleys is horrible!!...I think at some point you will wish you were back in shuttle. But hopefully I'm wrong.su

Thanks. I don't expect it to be a walk in the park but I am also prepared to work. My original plan was to drive "the big bus" so I'm ready to go. But I also look at SOME of the folks out there and think, if THEY can do it... It's funny, of everyone I talk to on a daily basis, it's a 50/50 split love/hate for trolleys lol.

I found the training very stressful and 6 weeks Is a long time. But my thinking was just like yours...I just had to calm myself down and remember some of the guys who have made it through :)

Trolleys was a pain in the ass to learn.
And the learning usually continues for the first 6-12 months on the job, as you learn each run. But they are nicer to drive and the braking is much better. Some of the braking on the diesels is horrible!!

It's much better starting in shuttle because you are protected and have some seniority when you switch over...plus they can't fire you, only send you back to shuttle, if training goes horrible.

2 didn't make it from my class and 4 from the class before mine. Usually a couple of newbies don't make it through each class, but most make it through.

Good luck and keep us posted. Hopefully we will see you on the road!!

As soon as I hear anything, I'll post it ASAP...
Are you keeping busy n the meantime?
I could suggest seasonal jobs at MetroVancouver or BC Ferries for those who need a decent income while waiting...

There are a few Ops that I know are retiring soon in one of the suburban depots...

Any Security Guards out there/ Still an active posting for 8 casual General Security Patrol at CMBC: $22 an hr to start...

    Ca_ftw,

Hopefully third time is a charm! And apply for any positions with Translink, you can always switch over jobs once you are in.
    - Bus, shuttle, farebox, sky train attendant, etc..
    * You can apply to as many positions as you like, while you are waiting the 12 months to reapply for bus.

Good luck and it was nice meeting you!!

Ha it's the same with the shuttles, some of them stop on a dime and others, mostly the newer Internationals, feel like you need two feet to hold it on a hill. My right thigh is getting huge!

I think with training, for anything, it's just a matter of taking the time and setting your mind to it. It's not necessarily difficult stuff, just lots of it. Kinda like seeing a paddle for the first time and going "WTF is THIS!??!" lol

I find that surprising actually, but I can see if someone coming from outside, and maybe a completely unrelated field, may have trouble. My background was 25 years in automotive and customer service so it was a good fit. And yes, going back to shuttle is an option, but not one that I am interested in! HAHA

    Thanks for the well wishes!

Congrats and good luck. I know you'll be busy with training, but if you hear anything about future classes, drop a line. I have still heard nothing. I am looking forward to getting going on this.

At least 4 "old timers" retired this past week...

I'm keeping my ear to the ground too, looking for more info...

Any "Security" experience? Maybe get your foot in the door as a GENERAL SECURITY PATROL? $22 an hour...

A few more INTERNAL job postings lately: Traffic Checker; Parts Driver; Shop Clerk; Interior Bus Cleaner & Clerical Relief... But so far, none have made the leap to the External-General public website... **West Vancouver has a posting up for their version of a Depot Coordinator?** www.westvancouver.ca/ if interested...

    Keep the faith!

If this funding referendum actually passes, things will heat up in short order for sure...
