You may be interested in knowing that the City of Burnaby is planning to drain the lower pond in Central Park in Burnaby. This is to catch a snakehead fish that is in the pond. They are also planning on euthanizing all other fish including the Koi fish and a colony of red eared slider turtles that have lived in the pond for decades. This will happen Friday June 8th. They have already attempted to drain the pond today but were stopped by a lone protestor. They are doing it quickly to avoid adverse public opinion. See attached link

    People to contact to protest:

Mayor Derek Corrigan, City of Burnaby 604-294-7340

The turtles and koi aren't native to the lake. As "cute" as they are, shouldn't they be removed also?

Why kill the fish. Just unleash some of the locals on them, they'll eat anything. You know who i'm talkinga bout.

  6. They aren't causing any problems for the lagoon. The pond is man-made so it's a bit ironic to be eradicating non-native species.

    Moron .

The protest may be short-sighted because even if the existing fishes don't die from this draining, they will die from being eaten by snakeheads.

Now that they caught the snakehead, the native fishes can live for generations to come.

^They euthanized the koi. I really wish they would have donated them. I think the turtles were saved by a rescue group though.

Apparently they refused to hand over the koi to the rescue group because the group did not have a transport permit or some bureaucratic bullshit like that. Ridiculous.

I'm glad the snakehead is gone, but there was a LOT of unfounded fear mongering being perpetuated by the media. People were happy to drink the kool-aid.
