Huge earthquake and its aftermath (tsunamis, landslides, etc) hitting Japan hard. Pretty scary, especially considering how much more prepared they are compared to Vancouver. Since it hit a developed country, there's a lot of live coverage and footage available. You can see the waves overwhelm all the infrastructure :(.

if you can't get a hold of them and they are currently in the area of Japan that got hit you can contact Foreign Affairs in Ottawa, they have an office in Japan that can keep you posted 1800 387 3124.

Upgraded to an estimated 9.0-9.1 magnitude.

Can't believe there are people "payback for pearl harbor" on twitter and facebook. I am embarrassed for humanity.

In response to the earthquake in Japan, Shaw will provide free calls to Japan for subscribers with a Shaw home phone until further notice. Shaw has also unscrambled TV Japan so Japanese speaking subscribers with friends and relatives in Japan can watch news of events unfolding on channel 514 until March 17.

^Read that earlier but it sounds overly optimistic to me due to the large number of unknowns. He makes a lot of assumptions that have been proven wrong. He also makes factual errors such as calling it the Richter scale and when comparing the relative magnitudes. Admittedly, these mistakes are common but it dampens how much faith I have in his information especially when he prefaces his post by saying how other articles have been erroneous.

The relative magnitudes between Mw 9 and Mw 10 is not simply 10^(10-9) = 10. It's 10^1.5(10-9) ~ 32. See the equation below.

Regardless, I agree that the media has been exaggerating the situation. CNN and other western media are the culprits. Updates directly from TEPCO are much better.

I found the Scientific American article to be a more realistic assessment: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=fukushima-core
