What's the latest on Vancouver's job market?

    Hi everyone,

I've been searching online through forums and job sites, etc. trying to get the latest update about the current job market situation in Vancouver. Sadly, most of the posts in the forums are from back in May or June, so I'm curious what's the current situation now that summer is winding down?

I've been planning and waiting to come to Vancouver since January this year, but due to financial constraints, I've had to delay my plans, but now that I've got the money, I keep hearing that the job market in Vancouver isn't so good?

I know that the economy downturn we had in 2009 is pretty much over in most places around the world. Things are definitely getting better this year, especially this month here in Calgary, Alberta, but is it true that Vancouver is still not doing so well?

I thought I'd get you guys' expert hands-on experience and advice on this. So what's the latest? If the job market isn't doing so good right now, what's the forecast? I'm thinking about coming in November, should I wait until next year?

Any thoughts, ideas, comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks everyone! :)

I really think it depends on the type of job your looking for... My industry is quite busy, but others I know are slow.

What do you do for work in Calgary.

I do admin type work in Calgary, such as Receptionist, Admin Assistant, etc. My boyfriend has been doing Data Entry and Facility Management. How's the job market for these types of jobs?

    What industry are you in?

Can't comment personally, but it is very industry dependent. In general though, Vancouver lags behind Toronto a lot so that might give you an idea of what it's like compared to Calgary.

I understand, many people have mentioned that Vancouver's job market is very industry based. What about general office jobs? That's the industry I'm looking at for both temporary jobs and permanent jobs.

By the way, what do you think are the best or worst months for moving to Vancouver? I'm guessing moving in December would be one of the worst months since it's Christmas and no companies would be hiring during that period (not counting retail stores hiring Christmas help).

To my knowledge, office positions open up closer to Christmas to cover for all of the vacation time people take over the holidays. Maybe it is a good time to move here? Hey, BC's only the best place on Earth (even during the rainy months)!

You may want to consider a hospitality job to supplement your income if you come to Van in the slower months in your industry. While the hospitality industry is slowing down due to the end of the summer, there are some good positions out there.

Good luck with your move and welcome to Van when you get here!
