Vancouver: Canadian City Or Chinese Colony?

Let's just admit this and get on with life. Vancouver is a colony of China and to a greater extent, all of Asia. The city is often described as North America's first Asian city which is remarkable since I don't think anyone would have considered saying so around 30 years ago.

In any case it should come as no surprise to learn that wealthy Chinese are house hunting in Vancouver.

Mainland Chinese interest in Metro Vancouver property is so strong that it's fuelling a market for real estate tourism, with groups of wealthy travellers scheduling visits to the city for the sole purpose of house hunting.

This is not uncharacteristic of the wealthy who buy property globally. But this isn't the story of a wealthy American buying land in the French countryside. This is about a considerable amount of land being purchased by people of a particular nationality, in this case China. According to the story it is common for 90% of interested buyers to be from mainland China. These are people who are not even Canadian citizens but have displayed an interest in Vancouver's high end real estate market.

I don't know why they are considering buying a second home in Vancouver when they are not even Canadian citizens yet I get the feeling that to these Chinese house hunters Canadian citizenship is a given.

Scarrow said he is aware of other such trips that have been arranged in the past, and when the Mainland Chinese visitors do not have their immigration status in Canada sorted out, they are more reluctant to buy homes.

The trips, he added, are more a chance to get a "lay of the land" for what Metro Vancouver's neighbourhoods are like and what types of homes are available before securing landed immigrant status.

To date, Scarrow said, the preference for Mainland Chinese emigrating to Canada have ranged from Coal Harbour condominiums to single-family homes in Vancouver's leafier enclaves of Shaughnessy, Dunbar and Point Grey.

Vincent Chen, a representative for the Chinese immigration consulting firm Visas Consulting Group, said Canada is presently the most popular destination for Mainland Chinese using his firm. They are attracted by its quality of education, quality of life, the safety and stability of Canadian society and its "attractive investor immigrant program."

The ""attractive investor immigrant program" is nothing but citizenship for sale. It's a sham introducing sham Canadians into the country. It works something like this. You promise to invest so much in the country, produce a least one job, and TA DA, instant Canadian.

Ever wonder why so many groceries and corner stores are owned and operated by Asians? Now you know. It's a joke really. These wealthy mainland Chinese can purchase a Tim Hortens franchise. Then they can sell their share in the business if they so wish, take a loss perhaps, but in the end they get Canadian citizenship on the cheap. And what a bargain. With it you get socialized medicine, a subsidized education for your children, and social services for your aged parents. Then you can go back to China to evade Canada's tax regime because Canada allows dual citizenship (whereas China does not).

Vancouver is a choice destination because un-assimilating Asian immigrants have turned it into a virtual Chinese colony. So are they really immigrating to Canada or to a Chinese colony on the North American continent?

This is a problem. They are creating a city that has more in common with Beijing then the rest of Canada and in turn can transform British Columbia into a Quebec of the west coast.

If Honk Kong immigrants taught us anything these wealthy mainland Chinese will be sham Canadians were they to immigrate to Canada. They should be discouraged from immigrating here. They are not interested in Canada or Canadians only in how they can capitalize off of Canadian society. They are already wealthy and they are not coming here in search of a better life. We don't need them or want them. Some reasonable solutions is to make residency requirements more demanding. The other is to tax overseas incomes of Canadians.

I am afraid I have to agree with this post. Canada's immigration policies make simply no sense. They serve the interests of big business rather than the common good of Canada. And they breed racism in exasperated Canadians.

Why target only one ethnic group? There are wealthy immigrants of different ethnic backgrounds who are also buying property in Vancouver. They are also contributing to the rising real estate prices in Vancouver.

... you raise a valid point, similar to one i raised on another vancouver forum regarding the denunciation of chinese-language signage in richmond. there definitely seems to be an anti-chinese bias in certain circles in british columbia ...

China and India account for no less than 25% of the new immigrants to Canada. This is way too high a proportion from just 2 nations. We really should examine the American model which has sought to cap immigration levels from any one region at 5%. I don't think this is racist - it just tries to create a more diverse composition of immigrants.

I was horrified when I read that someone had petitioned for Punjabi to be made one of the official languages of British Columbia. That's all Canada needs, more Quebec-style Balkanization. Look, assimilate to Canada or get the f-- out.

My contention is three fold: many of the Chinese immigrants lack language skills, they have received their wealth through corrupt Communist government connections and the proceeds of Slave Labour, and that there are too many of them. The last point leads to a burden on infrastructure.

I believe our corrupt local, regional and federal governments, along with the banks, have designed this to destroy Western society. There are other elements that play into this, but I don't want to digress...

Trade agreements need to change; Canadian real estate policy needs to change; immigration laws need to change; we also need to emphasize Canadian culture- Aboriginal, English, French, hockey, Bible values, classic rock music. That's Canada.

I am glad you put ABORIGINAL in the first place of your so called "Canadian culture". then you should know that English and French cultures are not originated from Canadian soil, they are immigrated from European continent. the Aboriginal culture allows English and French culture bet pert of Canadian culture, why don't you do the same to the latest immigrants who also have the rights to join Canadian culture with their own donations -- Chines culture and Indian culture?

if, Canadian culture is a narrow minded culture, it can"t open itself to the world, then it won"t survive in modern world -- a world which connected by airplane and internet, make it all in one, a big one world.

BTW, Chinese immigrants come to Canada only for one reason -- air quality,(fresh air, compare to China's air pollution), and nothing else. clean air is the only thing Canada is better than China, not for your outdated medical system, or your so called "high quality" of life which is actually much lower than the life style I had back in China.

The post you're replying to is two years old. I can't imagine what the chance are of the op's responding.
First of all, you can't speak for aboriginals. They are Canadian and as Canadians they speak for themselves. That comment shows that you have absolutely zero knowledge of legislative law.
"Canadian culture- Aboriginal, English, French, hockey, Bible values, classic rock music. That's Canada" The OP is correct, that is Canada's culture. We have two official languages and Chinese isn't one of them and never will be.
As for travel making everything one big world, that's a preposterous lie. We have borders you know, you aren't entitled to walk over them on a whim. Who besides Chinese are buying homes in China? China is a narrow minded culture, it can"t open itself to the world, and it won"t survive in the modern world China's content to be nothing more than a factory for the west. Lots of Chinese may come here for the clean air alone. That's exactly what antithetical to the culture here. It's all about greedy taking and taking and taking. That's why it won't last.

Chinese don't "take" anything, they buy everything, paid with Canadian dollars plus taxes.

The one really 'take" Canada land is English and French colonies who "take" the land from Aboriginal people by bloody killing !!!

Wow. Now why on earth would any country but yours want to saddle themselves with anyone as rude and awful as you? We don't have to you know.
Odd though that generations of Cantonese speaking Chinese have fit in here quite well. Not rude, no unwarranted sense of entitlement. Maybe that's because they're oppressed in China by the corrupt Mandarin speaking government and Mandarin speaking majority. Odd what a difference there is in the cultures. We can pick and choose, and unchoosing someone like you is easy.
By the way, your utterly irrelevant screaming about natives is stupid. LIke I said before. You have zero knowledge about the law, and zero knowledge of anything else. Your parents have spoiled you.
    Oh yeah and FREE TIBET!

You have zero right to chose Chinese, you can't even chose your own life style, because you are nobody, a poor loser can only complain about people richer than you.

Cantonese have been oppressed under British government for 100 years, yes they are tamed slaves, which is exactly what you stupid white master wanted. They are not real Chinese. not independent rich strong mandarin Chinese. Yes we mandarin Chinese are very different people, we grown up in an totally independent country which had had war against US, Mandarin Chinese have money, they have weapon, they don't give it a shit about any masters.

    Go to hell stupid racism.

  19. It's really sad. All my friends who have families here (parents, siblings) who were born in Vancouver or Burnaby have left Vancouver. They have either moved out of the province or far away in BC to small towns because they can't afford to live here near their families where they were born. Meanwhile people who are not Canadian born buy up property like some Monopoly game. My parents said their are some on their block in Vancouver. They don't even live in the house for more than a few months. Thanks a lot freaking Canadian government.

Of course they won't do anything about it. They are raking in money from all the property taxes and other benefits of a hot market.

It's spiking the price up for everything. Consumer goods as well.
