Much to my surprise, VISA is not accepted at Tim Hortons. They take only MasterCard.

This is the first time I see a store that rejects VISA. Would be very convenient if they would.

Stores owned by Loblaws only accept mastercard as well (Superstore, No Frills, T&T, SuperValu, Extra Foods, etc.). No complaints from me since the best cards are typically MC.

When I started using credit cards, I only had an Amex which was quite inconvenient.

I only Have Mastercard. Love the tap thing. No need for annoying signature or pin number.

VISA is accepted at Loblaws stores including Superstore, T&T, Extra Foods for some years now.

VISA should have a bigger market share than MasterCard, more Canadian banks (TD Bank, CIBC, Royal Bank, Nova Scotia Bank etc) issues VISA than MasterCard.

How true, Tim Hortons in not accepting VISA is like not respecting people who carry VISA cards.

If they refuse to take Amex, Diners or Discover, that is quite understandable since not many people carry those cards.

VISA also have the tap thing; theirs is called Pay Wave. Like MasterCard's PayPass, it uses the RFID technology.

But RFID is not that cool, it is prone to hackers or anyone who wanted to steal your information. That is why a lot of people took pains to remove the RFID chip from their credit card.

How to disable Pay Pass RFID chip in Credit Card

Oh neat... I always wanted to pick up a Visa as a spare, but I found that their cards paled in comparison to MC (at least the ones without an annual fee).

My go to card is the MBNA Smartcash - 3% on gas & groceries :). If you sign up via Great Canadian Rebates, you get a $60 bonus once approved too.

I did stumble across the Chase Amazon.ca Visa that looks promising - no foreign exchange fee & 2% on amazon.ca purchases and 1% on everything else. Might make a thread on it later.

That MBNA 3% sounds like a good deal - best cash back ever.

The Amazon.ca is another great one for cross border shopping. 1% on everything else is still good because some cash back cards only give the 1% after spending $5000, the first $5000 is 0.5%. Got to read the wording properly, up to 1% means it does not start at 1%. Having said this, I haven't read Amazon.ca fine print, so I unsure if they give 1% or up to 1%.

    Yet another surprise!

Tim Hortons started to accept VISA credit cards, it's about time..

Not sure if this is nationwide, the Tim Hortons at Lougheed Mall accepts my VISA credit card with a big smile :)

I prefer using cash as well. I do have both Visa and MC.

Seems like a fair trade. When I tried to buy tickets to the 2010 Olympics I couldn't because I didn't have a Visa.

If a store is going to accept credit cards then it should take credit cards. Why choose one over the other & inconvenience your customers? Its like saying No to their money. I just went to No Frills & they did not take Visa so I left all my stuff at the cash register & walked out.

Business is not that simple-it's painfully apparent you've rarely left your Mother's basement.

A business has to have an agreement with each individual credit card company. The credit card company charges the business some amount for each transaction. There are likely other charges as well. Each business needs to determine if it is worth paying these costs for each credit card company whose cards they choose to take.
